This is crucial to prevent the local storage from being wiped off due to the architectural changes in the location of the local storage for BrightSign OS 8. NoteThe BrightSign RC-1001 remote control is only supported via the 3.5mm IR jack on BrightSign devices, and not via the USB IR receivers. However, we do not support the BrightSign RC-1002. Strengths BrightSign develops its own hardware, firmware, and software. A slim, fan-less design is ideal for even the most challenging environments. Good 4K video playback performance on the XT4, XT3, and XD3 devices. The XT4 devices are designed to support Dolby Vision and HDR10+ for displaying vibrant colors with our App’s HTML5 engine. Good multicast video playback on all BrightSign devices. Power over Ethernet (PoE) support on XT4 and XT3 devices. A range of devices to meet different performance and configuration requirements. OPS module provides slot-in compatibility with several leading manufacturers’ display products (e.g., NEC). Proprietary device management platform available from BrightSign, offering additional hardware management tools. Ideal for both cloud and on-prem Appspace deployments.ChallengesA microSD card must be purchased separately for each BrightSign device. BrightSign is working on a solution for Appspace customers. To display text on top of video requires some workarounds; you must add the Custom.media.video.layerindex property to your device. The LS Series models are rather low-power devices, and therefore it is recommended to use only simple images and cards without animation, with transitions disabled.SummaryBrightSign devices are purpose-built for digital signage and kiosks. The company’s Series 4 redesign shows its commitment to customer experience and reliability.Device LimitationsThe RSS Ticker animation stutters when displayed on BrightSign devices due to technical limitations, caused by iframe loading issues. On BrightSign 9.0 devices, videos that have been configured to be displayed in Portrait are being displayed in Landscape due to a bug. Appspace has already begun working on this, and a fix will be available in a future release.GuidesConfigure Appspace for Devices App on BrightSign Configure Appspace App on BrightSign with BSN.cloudChrome OSMinimum Certified OS / Firmware Device Series Reference Models Ideal For Content Delivery Mode Appspace App Device Platform Minimum Appspace Version ChromeOS LTS 126 AOpen Chromeboxes AOpen Chromebox Commercial Digital Signage / Room Scheduling / Kiosks / Enterprise TV Caching via Chrome Web Store Appspace 8.0 AOpen Chromebox Commercial 2 AOpen Chromebases AOpen Chromebase Commercial Asus Chrome OS Asus Chromebox CN60 Asus Chromebit CS10 Asus Google Meet Compute System (Intel 10th Gen) Wallpaper / Screensavers Streaming via Appspace PWA URL Appspace 8.1 ChromeOS Flex version 126 AOpen Ace AOpen DE3650-S Digital Signage / Room Scheduling / Kiosks / Enterprise TV Caching via Chrome Web Store Appspace 8.9.0-ac.5 Dell OptiPlex Dell OptiPlex 3020 ImportantAppspace only supports issues arising from managed Chrome-based devices, this requires Google Chrome Enterprise (previously Chrome Device Management) to manage your Chrome-based devices. Download the Appspace App for BrightSign (autorun.zip) to your computer, and extract the autorun.zip file. Navigate and open the main.brs file located in the appspace folder. Locate the “vmCreate Object (“roVideoMode”) line of code (default in line 40), and enter the following block of code based on the video wall configuration and number of HDMI outputs that are utilized:Each Screen (HDMI Output) requires its own block of code to be added to the main.brs file. Example of the code block below: sm.[x].video_mode - Resolution Settingsm.[x].transform - Rotation Settingsm.[x].display_x - Position of content on x axis (screen width)sm.[x].display_y - Position of content on y axis (screen height)sm.[x].enabled/disabled - Flag to power on/off this HDMI output. Screens: To enable or disable a screen is merely a matter of setting sm[x].enabled or sm[x].disabled where ‘x‘ is the number of the HDMI output/screen. Orientations: As you can see, its merely a matter of changing the sm[x].display_x or sm[x].display_y values depending on whether the wall is vertical or horizontal. You may need to take into account a bezel offset if perhaps the client screens are physically offset and they wish this effect to translate to the content. Resolutions: The resolution values can be changed according to the supported resolutions guide from BrightSign. Review the Supported Video Modes article. Rotations: To denote the proper screen rotation change the sm[x].transform value to either = { “normal”, “90”, “180”, “270” }. Once done, save the main.brs file and repackage it back to the autorun.zip file. Proceed to configure your BrightSign device with the modified autorun.zip file.Example 1:This code block example assumes a 2 x 1 video wall (1080p – “Horizontal Row” or a “standard wall”) vm=CreateObject("roVideoMode")sm = vm.GetScreenModes()sm[0].video_mode="1920x1080x60p"sm[0].transform = "normal"sm[0].display_x=0sm[0].display_y=0sm[0].enabled=truesm[1].video_mode="1920x1080x60p" sm[1].transform = "normal" sm[1].display_x=1920 'Not adding an offet for bezels, might need to increase this value if screen 2 is cutoff.sm[1].display_y=0sm[1].enabled=truesm[2].enabled=false 'Disabling the other two screens just for testingsm[3].enabled=false 'Disabling the other two screens just for testingvm.SetScreenModes(sm) Example 2:This code block example assumes a 1 x 2 video wall (1080p – “Landscape Stack”) vm=CreateObject("roVideoMode")sm = vm.GetScreenModes()sm[0].video_mode="1920x1080x60p"sm[0].transform = "normal"sm[0].display_x=0sm[0].display_y=0sm[0].enabled=truesm[1].video_mode="1920x1080x60p"sm[1].transform = "normal"sm[1].display_x=0sm[1].display_y=1100 ' Bezel compensation of 20 pixelssm[1].enabled=truesm[2].enabled=falsesm[3].enabled=falsevm.SetScreenModes(sm) Update Appspace App on BrightSign NoteThis is applicable to Appspace App version 1.13 and above. Update BrightSign Firmware ImportantIf you wish to upgrade existing BrightSign devices running the Appspace App to OS version 8.5, the Appspace App must be updated to version 2.54.2 first, before the device firmware is updated to version 8.5. This is crucial to prevent the local storage from being wiped off due to the architectural changes in the location of the local storage for BrightSign OS 8. BrightSign devices running firmware v 8.3.46, requires Appspace App to be updated to version 2.36 or higher. BrightSign devices are unable to update the Appspace App versions automatically. Please refer to the Update Appspace App on BrightSign section below for workarounds. DHCP Option 43 is supported on Appspace App 1.36 and above. Device registration information should persist when upgrading your BrightSign device firmware to BSFW 8.3.46. Enable Chromium Web Inspector Engine With the release of BrightSign OS 8.5, the Chromium Web Inspector engine is disabled by default, and to ensure that users do not unintentionally enable the remote web inspector on production software, as this may cause an increase in memory usage and is unsecured, an extra registry value has been added to the HTML registry section to enable the web inspector.Follow the instruction below to manually enable the Chromium Web Inspector engine on BrightSign OS 8.5 devices.Log in to the Appspace console. Select the ☰ Appspace menu, and click Devices > Settings > App Downloads tab. Download the Appspace App for BrightSign (autorun.zip) to your computer, and extract the autorun.zip file. Navigate and open the main.brs file located in the appspace folder. Proceed to enter the following script to enable the Chromium Web Inspector engine. registryHtmlSection = CreateObject("roRegistrySection", "html")registryHtmlSection.write("enable-inspector-server", "1") Once done, save the main.brs file and repackage it back to the autorun.zip file. Proceed to configure your BrightSign device with the modified autorun.zip file. Launch a web browser, and enter the BrightSign device IP address to navigate to the BrightSign device dashboard. Click the DIAGNOSTICS tab, and check the Allow Javascript console checkbox in the Chromium Debugging section. Click SET to confirm changes, and reboot the device. Once the device has been rebooted, the Chromium Web Inspector engine is enabled and should be accessible by navigating via the device’s IP Address and port <192.268.0.1:2999> Technical Limitations & WorkaroundThe RSS Ticker animation stutters when displayed on BrightSign devices due to technical limitations, caused by iframe loading issues.BrightSign 9.0Videos that have been configured to be displayed in Portrait on BrightSign 9.0 devices are being displayed in Landscape due to a bug. Appspace has already begun working on this, and a fix will be available in a future release.

Introduction Premium Users and Licenses Platform Users and Licenses Managing Licenses, Roles and Permissions Adding and Registering Users in Appspace Premium Users Platform Users Platform User Roles and Functions Roles for IT Administrators The Portal Admin The Account Admin The Account Owner The Location Admin Roles and Permissions for Content Management Publisher for a location Publisher for a channel or channel group Editor for a channel Author Role Recommendations Conclusion IntroductionAppspace is a versatile platform that allows users to access any feature and functionality as long as they have sufficient roles or permissions. Historically, all users of Appspace were administrators, where they log in to the console to perform content management and administrative tasks to get channels published to workplace devices. With the introduction of the workplace experience module, Appspace now includes newer features such as space reservation and employee communications, Appspace users are no longer just administrators who need access to the console. These users can now be any employee in a company who can use Appspace to make a reservation, check-in to a building, or simply view company content. The following describes the distinction between user licenses, roles, and permissions as used in Appspace:Licenses: User licenses grant digital rights for a user to use specific features in Appspace. The two user licenses in Appspace are the Premium user license and the Platform user license. Roles: User roles contain a collection of permissions that are commonly used together and reflect the activity that needs to be done by specific user personas, such as IT administrators or content publishers in an organization. We have various roles with permissions to access the console that can be assigned to users, such as the Account Owner, Location Admin, or Publisher. Permissions: Permissions are assigned at the feature level in the Appspace console such as in Channels, Locations or the Library. For example, a user with a Publisher role will be able to control user permissions to channel-specific features, such as assigning publishing rights for a channel. To make a clear distinction between end users who browse content and make workplace reservations, and administrators who need to access the console to perform content management and administration duties, Appspace presents two types of user licenses: Premium Users and Platform Users.Premium Users and LicensesPremium users are employees, and can access the Employee View to view user-centric content and make workplace reservations in their organization, either via a mobile device or a web browser.Premium users will utilize the corresponding Premium User license. The Premium User license grants access to the Employee View.Platform Users and LicensesPlatform users are typically team leads, department heads, and IT administrators that need access to the console to create, manage, and publish content, and administer the platform.Platform users will utilize the corresponding Platform User licenses. The Platform User license grants access to the console. The number of licenses for each type of user will be shown on the dashboard in the Account Management Portal.Managing Licenses, Roles and PermissionsAn Appspace account starts with one principal user who has an Account Owner role. This user is registered as both a Premium user and Platform user, as this user will have access to both the Employee View and the console. This principal user is responsible for managing licenses, roles, and permissions at the start, and can delegate this responsibility to other users. For most companies, the majority of employees will be registered as premium users. A small handful of employees will also become platform users in addition based on their departmental responsibilities. The Account Owner can assign the appropriate license to users in the organization’s account depending on whether they need access to the Employee View, perform management duties in the console, or both. The Account Owner can add users into an organization’s Appspace account through the Users module in the Appspace console. From there, the Account Owner can manage the provisioning of licenses for the appropriate users. The number of licenses will be shown on the dashboard in the Account Management Portal.Adding and Registering Users in AppspaceTo add more users into an Appspace account, the Account Owner can either configure the account to use SSO with JIT to enable their organization’s users to log in to the Appspace platform seamlessly, or manually invite users through the Users module. In Appspace 8.0, you can assign the licensing type to a user during the user invitation process, or update the licensing information to the user’s profile in the console.Premium UsersPremium users are employees who get access to the Employee View. In order for them to have access to Appspace, these users need to be provisioned with the Premium user license. With this license, premium users will be able to do the following:View published content and channels. Access departmental channel groups that they have access to. Look for available building passes and workspaces to make reservations.Premium users will not have access to the console. If users require access to the console, they need to be provisioned with the Platform user license. If users need access to both the Employee View and the console for management duties, they will need to be provisioned with both the Premium user license and Platform user license.Platform UsersPlatform users are essentially administrators, content publishers, and content creators with access to the console. In order for them to have roles that can access the console, they will need to be provisioned with the Platform user license. When using the console, these users can:Access all authoring tools in the platform. Manage locations, devices, and users. Access content and console analytics. Manage support cases, payments, and upgrades.Platform users have a range of roles to manage different areas in the console. The following roles will require the provisioning of a platform user license:Portal Admin Account Admin Account Owner Location Admin Publisher AuthorThe Platform user license can be assigned to anyone in an account to grant access to the console for management duties. The roles enabled by the license allow the user to perform specific functions in the Appspace platform and is scoped to an account or location.Platform User Roles and FunctionsWith the Platform user license provisioned to a user, the user can be assigned with any of the platform user roles. The title of the role often describes the function of the role such as Portal Admin or Publisher. A user can be assigned one or more roles, and will also inherit roles from user groups or locations if applicable. The following sections describe all of the platform user roles in Appspace, and how they relate to personas in an organization.Roles for IT AdministratorsIT Administrators perform tasks such as platform configuration, device registrations, Appspace App for workplace devices, or card theme customizations, as well as device, location, and user management. The list below outlines the description for each role in further detail. The Portal AdminPortal Admin (on-prem only) – a system administrator of the Appspace platform in an on-prem environment, with full access to all server settings, accounts, locations, users, devices, channels, content, and analytics data. In a multi-tenancy environment, the Portal Admin has the same access to all locations (networks) in multiple accounts. The Account AdminAccount Admin (on-prem only) – a role with access to all accounts and locations in the Appspace platform in an on-prem environment, but does not have access to the platform system settings. In a multi-tenancy environment, the Account Admin has full access to all locations in multiple accounts. The Account OwnerAccount Owner – the principal role of an Appspace account with full access to create content and channels, register and manage devices, invite users and assign user roles and permissions, create and manage locations, configure themes, and perform various other administrative tasks. In summary, the Account Owner can function as an administrator for an account, Location Admin, Publisher, and Author, all in one. The principal Account Owner may choose to assign additional Account Owner roles to other users in an organization if needed.Note: In a multi-tenancy environment, the Account Owner has access to the locations in a single account only. The Location AdminLocation Admin – a role with access to device and location management features for a specific location. A Location Admin is able to add and manage devices, add device properties, create and organize maps and floor plans, set location properties, and assign default channels for a location.Roles and Permissions for Content ManagementContent managers and content creators in an organization perform tasks such as creating and uploading content to the Library, creating and publishing content to channels, and reviewing content approvals for publishing. The list below outlines the description for each role in further detail.Publisher for a locationPublisher (location) – a user assigned with the Publisher role for a location has full control of all channels and channel properties within that location. A Publisher is able to:Manage the Cards module. Manage all channels and channel settings. Approve content change requests by editors or individual channel publishers. Add and edit the content in any channel. Assign devices, apps, or users to each channel or channel group. Assign other users to be Publishers for the location or for any channel in that location. The Publisher role can be assigned to a user for one or more locations. If the user is a Publisher for multiple locations, that user will have the same channel management permissions to all the channels within those locations. The Publisher role is assigned to a user by an Account Owner or Location Admin.Publisher for a channel or channel groupPublisher (channel or channel group) – a user assigned with publisher permissions for a specific channel or channel group will have publishing rights for that channel or channel group. A user with channel publishing permissions is able to approve changes, edit content, and update settings for that specific channel. The permissions control can be accessed in each individual channel’s settings.Editor for a channelEditor (channel) – the editor permission is specific to a channel, and is granted by the publisher of that channel. A user with channel editing permissions is only able to add or edit content in that specific channel, and may require content change approval from either one of the publishers.AuthorAuthor – this role grants access only to the Library module in the console. Users with the Author role are able to:Upload media, create any card from the available templates (Announcement, Room Schedule, Google Slides etc.) Organize content in folders, and manage content properties including tags.If a user with the Author role is given permissions to publish or edit a channel, that user will be able to create and add content for that channel in addition to the Library. If no channel is assigned, the author can only add content to the Library. The Author role is assigned to a user by an Account Owner or Location Admin.Role RecommendationsThe following suggestions can serve as a guide for which persona in an organization should get which platform user role: Persona Roles Global or regional IT administrator Portal Admin Account Admin Account Owner Location-based facilities administrator Location Admin Department head Publisher Line manager Publisher Team content creator Author ConclusionWith a clear distinction between premium users and platform users, organizations will be able to better plan how their employees, team leads, managers, and department heads can utilize Appspace. As a base rule, everyone in an organization should be provisioned as premium users so that they can have access to the Employee View. The remaining responsibility is to then determine which members of the organization should be provisioned as platform users so that they can be assigned with the appropriate role. With a proactive team of Appspace users in an organization using the right user roles, the overall management of workplace resources, digital signage infrastructure, and content strategy, can all be executed efficiently.

Appspace App Built-in is when Appspace hardware partners incorporate the Appspace App directly into their firmware or devices, providing an out-of-the-box solution by leveraging existing workplace devices and systems that may have specialized dedicated functions (i.e video conferencing). As it comes pre-built into these devices, the Appspace App functionality may be limited to only certain features, such as:Basic wallpaper or signage displays using Appspace on room conferencing devices that are idle. Basic wallpaper or signage displays using Appspace Lite, on the vendor’s device management portal. Room scheduling with Appspace cards on purpose-built room scheduling devices or smart signboards. In this article, we list all supported devices and operating systems that have been certified by Appspace based on our certification levels as detailed in our Introduction to Devices in Appspace guide. For a list of all devices that support the Appspace Mobile App or allow for the Appspace App for Devices to be installed, see Appspace Supported Devices and Operating Systems. The Appspace integrations bring additional features to existing infrastructure to enhance corporate communication. The Appspace integrations do not interfere with Cisco functionality. Appspace does not just change the wallpaper but provides the end-user with a lot of the features that are traditionally available only on digital signage devices, like the ability to schedule content, use Alerts and create good-looking content by leveraging Appspace Cards. To make it easier for Cisco device administrators to access Appspace content, Appspace and Cisco are offering another integration, which will enable Cisco users to access the Appspace content management system directly via the Webex Control Hub, to display engaging digital signage and/or interactive content when the device is not in use as a video conferencing tool.ChallengesConstantly streaming content may increase bandwidth usage. Check out our Managing Bandwidth in Appspace guide for help. Currently, the Collaboration Endpoint device integration requires an external Appspace App supported device, known as a caching device, which is responsible for uploading the content to the endpoints. The caching device needs to access the Appspace Cloud and be on the same local network as the endpoints (for CE 9.8 and earlier only). Mass registration requires a desktop tool developed by Cisco to install the macro (for CE 9.8 and earlier only).SummaryThe Cisco Collaboration Endpoints are purpose-built for conference rooms. The wallpaper is a secondary feature, hence, content should be limited to using images and cards only. Alternately turn on Signage Mode. Other than a few Appspace App supported devices that are responsible for the content sync in Collaboration Endpoint devices (for CE 9.8 and earlier only), there is no new hardware investment necessary as the display devices are already in place.GuidesConfigure Appspace Signage for Cisco Webex Control Hub Setup Wallpaper Displays for Cisco Webex Share Setup Signage Mode for Cisco Webex Board and Webex Room Series Setup Wallpaper Displays for Cisco Collaboration Endpoints CE9.9 and later Setup Wallpaper Displays for Cisco Collaboration Endpoints CE9.8 and earlierCrestronMinimum Certified OS / Firmware Device Series Reference Models Ideal For Content Delivery Mode Appspace App Device Platform Minimum Appspace Version Firmware 1.5552.01016 Desk Touch TSS-470E Room Scheduling Streaming Preinstalled on device Appspace 8.1 Firmware 1.002.0040 70 Series Touch Screens TSS-770 Appspace 8.0 TSS-1070 Firmware 3.002.0036 60 Series Touch Screens End of support: 1/1/2026 TSS-10 TSS-7 Firmware 3.0200.0075 AirMedia Series 3 AM-3000 Digital Signage in huddle spaces / conference rooms Caching Appspace 8.1 AM-3200 AM-3100 Firmware 1.4499.00009 AirMedia 2.0 AM-300 Streaming Appspace 8.0 AM-200 Firmware 1.4095.00038 Mercury CCS-UC-1 Digital Signage in conference rooms StrengthsCrestron develops its own hardware, firmware, and management software. Back in the Register a New Device window, enter the Device name and select a location. If a location has not been created, you may skip this step and assign a location later. In the Channel selection mode field, select one of these playback options and assign a channel (if already created): Users browse published channels – this is the interactive mode or channel browsing mode, ideal for touch screen TVs or TVs with remote control, to display corporate content and enterprise tv, in any common space. When displaying the channel browsing mode, anyone can browse and play any content published to this device. While a Location Admin configures this setting, a Publisher must publish channels to the device and may assign any type of content, and channel type. Autoplay published channels – when this option is selected, one or more channels will autoplay on the device. This option is ideal for wallpaper displays in collaboration devices, video walls, interactive billboards, and any other workplace or public space signage needs. No user interaction is needed. Content is displayed according to scheduling or dayparting settings. While a Location Admin configures this setting, a Publisher must publish channels to the device and configure the scheduling settings. This option is currently available only for playlist channels. Administrators can select a single channel – this option displays only one channel, with any type of content, and channel type (playlist channel, an advanced channel, or a live channel). It is ideal for information kiosks, POS systems, bulletin boards, room scheduling, and simple signage. The Location Admin who registers the device is able to assign one single channel directly during this configuration. However, to select a channel here, the channel must already be created prior to this registration. If the channel has not been created, you may skip this step, and you (Location Admin) or a Publisher may assign a channel later. Click the Save button. Back in the Register a New Device window, click Show advanced options and enter: Device description – type a brief description for the device such as its location or its function. Device group – select an existing device group. Skip this step if there is no device group created. You may assign a device group later. Device tag – select from exiting tags or type in new tags. Click the REGISTER button. Once registration is complete, the device will sync with the Appspace console to retrieve content. Once content syncing is complete, you can view your published channel(s) on the TV, tablet, or on a kiosk. However, if no channels have been assigned to the device or user, you will see a blank screen. Proceed with one of the following, based on the channel Channel selection mode selected in step 6 above. Users browse published channels – for channels to appear in interactive mode or channel browsing mode, a Publisher must publish multiple channels or channel groups to this device. Autoplay published channels – for one or more playlist channels to autoplay based on the playlist sequence, a Publisher must publish multiple channels or channel groups to this device and configure the channel’s scheduling or dayparting settings. Only a playlist channel is supported. Administrators can select a single channel – assign one channel; a Location Admin or a Publisher must assign either a playlist channel, an advanced channel, or a live channel. You may now proceed to configure device settings, or find out how to browse and view content displayed by the Appspace App. NoteIn Appspace App 1.35 and above, you have the option to sync content in the background, allowing Appspace App to immediately display your published channel(s) via streaming mode. Once the content syncing process is complete, the app restarts and displays content via local storage. To sync content in the background, click the SYNC IN BACKGROUND button during the content syncing process.
