Question

Appspace app crashing on Brighsign players. Remote re-provisioning via BSN as work-around.

Is anyone else experiencing a similar issue with BrightSign players (both Cobra and Malibu family)?

We’re seeing instances where the Appspace app fails to launch after a nightly reboot. The device remains on, but shows a content-less/blank screen like in the attached snapshot.

Symptoms we’re seeing:

  • In Appspace, the device shows as offline / lost connection
  • In BSN / BA Connected, the device shows as healthy and we can perform remote actions (reboot, software updates, screenshots, etc.)
  • Rebooting and updating BrightSign OS/firmware (when available) does not bring Appspace back
  • The temporary workaround is to re-provision the player via BSN Cloud / BA Connected, but this only works for players originally created via BSN
  • Some of our players were created using the Appspace image and cannot be remotely re-provisioned, and they’re experiencing the same issue

Log information:
From the device logs on a player where Appspace has stopped, this is the last entry mentioning Appspace:

I did a comparison between a working and non working device.

Appspace folder on the SD card:
Config.json from working device:

{"cursorVisible":false,"displayRotation":0,"isAppUpdateEnabled":true,"startupUrl":"/appspace/app-2.95.0-build7."hidden-by-design"/index.html"}

Config.json from non working device:
Further, all the App-X.YY.Z is missing in the folder. Its like appspace has been wiped?

{"cursorVisible":false,"displayRotation":0,"startupUrl":"file:/appspace/main/index.html"}

is it the Appspace updater that fails and causes the application to go corrupt? Auto update for Brightsign devices has been enabled, and is working on most of the players.

On a Malibu (XT244) device, the config.json file is being found as 0 bytes after a software update to 2.95.0.

This means the Appspace configuration is missing, and Appspace fails to initialize correctly after the update/reboot.
