I’m interested to hear first-hand experience of caching content locally on Tizen displays running Appspace.

  • Challenges with configuration?
  • Unforseen issues/outcomes
  • What happens when storage is full?
  • Some of the 65” (QB65C) only have about 3Gb available, I know it depends on a lot, but is that enough?
  • What am I forgetting to ask.

Any/all info is appreciated. Thanks!

Hey @ASEI_Jason

In my experience the local caching on Tizen displays works quite well--basically inline with other caching signage devices that we support. That being said, let me address your bullet points individually:

  • Challenges with configuration?
    • There’s no unique configuration for Tizen to use the onboard storage. The Appspace App for Devices does that automatically. The only unique configuration considerations are those unique to Tizen in general, as outlined in our article here.
  • Unforeseen issues/outcomes
    • I’m not aware of any thing specifically, but I’ll list a few caveats to be aware of:
      • Limited storage space (will address below)
      • Great, but not top-of-the-line, performance. Like all system on a chip (SoC) devices, they typically don’t have the same horsepower as dedicated standalone signage players. That being said, the latest Tizen models are quite capable. Regardless, be cautious with multizone signage, really complex and intensive web content, or simultaneous video playback.
  • What happens when storage is full?
    • When the storage is full the device will begin streaming any content from Appspace’s servers that it wasn’t able to cache.
  • Some of the 65” (QB65C) only have about 3Gb available, I know it depends on a lot, but is that enough?
    • 3Gb is plenty for most basic signage, even including videos. You’ll definitely want to be wary of video file size though. Make sure that any videos you use are encoded efficiently and at a reasonable bitrate, especially 4K videos.
    • I haven’t tested this on the QB65C specifically, but on older Tizen models I was able to plug in a USB thumb drive and the Appspace App was able to utilize that extended storage as well.
  • What am I forgetting to ask.
    • I can’t think of anything!
