Add a Live Channel to Media Zone in an Advanced Channel

I am trying to add a Live Channel to Media Zone in an Advanced Channel.  I have a series of 4 Live Channels configured and I am trying to setup a way to show them on a configured schedule.  I have an Advanced Channel created and 4 separate layouts configured.  I found some language this site to link a media zone to a live channel, but it does not let me proceed.  AI created these steps below, but I cannot get past Step 4.  I’m lookin for any further guidance anyone can provide.

Steps to add a Live Channel to a Media Zone (advanced channel)

1) Create the Live Channel

  • Create a Live channel and configure the stream (HLS or multicast) in the Live channel Edit tab.
  • Select the EPG provider/source for the live channel (EPG must already be configured by an administrator).
  • Save the Live channel.

2) Create or open the Advanced Channel (Sign)

  • From Channels, create an Advanced Channel or open an existing advanced channel.
  • In the channel editor, open the Edit tab and launch the Visual (WYSIWYG) Editor.

3) Add a Media Zone widget to the layout

  • In the Visual Editor click Add Widget and choose the Media Zone widget (Media Zone is a built-in widget available in advanced channels).
  • Place and size the Media Zone on the layout as required.

4) Configure the Media Zone widget to use the Live Channel

  • Open the Media Zone widget properties (widget configuration panel).
  • Set the Media Zone’s source to the live stream (point it to the Live channel stream URL or select the Live channel/source available in the widget configuration).
  • Configure any playout options needed (aspect ratio, audio, layering). If device-specific video layering is required, configure the relevant device property for video overlay layer index.

5) Preview, save, and configure channel settings

  • Preview the advanced channel layout in the Preview tab (note live streams may not render fully in browser preview).
  • In Settings, verify permissions and channel group assignment. If needed, set layout scheduling and approval notifications.

6) Publish the advanced channel to devices

  • In the Publish tab assign the advanced channel to the target devices or users and publish.
  • Ensure device Channel Selection Mode is set appropriately for advanced-channel playback (for advanced channels, configure device Channel Selection Mode to allow Administrators to select a single channel or Users can browse published channels).
  • Confirm devices are running a supported Appspace App version and have any required device properties set (for example, media layering or video aspect ratio).

Hi @ashoemaker,

Great news, this is possible, though, it may not be with certain streams.

You will want to complete Step 1, then navigate to Library > Create > Legacy > External (Legacy) > and select Video and enter the URL.

Click Save.

You will then go into the Advanced Channel, to the zone, and load the card you created above.

Note, it does not always preview well.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions, or run into any further issues!

@ashoemaker

I’ve reached out to your CSM to help escalate this internally, and they will be contacting you directly. I apologize for the delay in response and I appreciate your patience while we work to get you the guidance you need.

I can see you’ve already done quite a bit of due diligence on your end, including consulting AI resources. Out of curiosity, did you happen to use “Kirby” (our chat agent in the lower-right corner of the platform) to obtain the troubleshooting steps, or was this from another AI source? That feedback would be very helpful for our teams if the guidance originated from Kirby.

You may have already reviewed this article, but in case you haven’t, this resource may provide additional insight while we continue investigating internally: Link Media Zones in Advanced Channels

Thank you again for your patience, and we’ll continue working to get this resolved for you.

Hi @ashoemaker. I am Unum’s CSM and am happy to assist. As Dawn said, I apologize for the delay in response.

After additional testing, it appears this is not currently possible. I have reached out to one of our Solutions Engineers to confirm this, and will follow up with you as soon as I hear back.

Best regards,

Hi Dawn!  Thanks for the update.  I did not use the Kirby AI in the lower right corner.  I honestly didn’t even notice it.  I did find that article, but it did not reference Live Channels

Heather, thank you for this information!  I was able to build the cards and add them to the media zones and they are playing in the appspace preview!  Thanks!

@ashoemaker glad to hear!
