Announcement — Temporary Updates for Windows Electron Devices: What You Need to Know
Appspace is currently investigating a hardware identification conflict on Windows devices. To prevent potential device identification conflicts resulting from the manufacturer-level duplication of hardware serial numbers (fingerprints), Appspace is implementing proactive, precautionary measures to enforce absolute tenant isolation.
To ensure strict data isolation and tenant security, Appspace is deploying two immediate stopgap measures across all public and private cloud environments. These temporary updates adjust how Windows Electron devices register, recover, and display within your console while our engineering teams work on a permanent resolution.
What this means for you: Existing registered Windows Electron devices will continue operating normally and remain fully available for content delivery and device management.
Prerequisites
- Appspace Account — Active Appspace public or private cloud administrative user account.
- Administrator Role — Account Owner or Location Admin role required to register or manage devices within the console.
- Affected Hardware — Windows Electron media player devices registered within the environment.
What This Guide Covers
- Understanding the two immediate, platform-wide temporary mitigation changes
- The functional impacts on console features, inventory listings, and reports
- Required administrative actions to restore service if a device token is lost
What is Changing?
Two temporary changes are being applied to Windows Electron devices to ensure they remain securely associated with the correct Appspace environment:
1. Platform-Wide Disabling of Registration Recovery
To prevent devices from mistakenly connecting to an incorrect account, automatic registration recovery has been disabled at the platform level for all Windows Electron devices.
The Impact: If a Windows Electron device loses its registration token, it will not automatically restore or recover its registration status.
2. Updates to Device Identification (Fingerprints)
Appspace has temporarily adjusted the hardware attributes used to uniquely identify Windows Electron devices. Specifically, we are removing the Serial Number and MAC Address from the hardware fingerprint.
Temporarily removing these unique hardware identifiers impacts the following platform features:
| Feature | Impact |
|---|---|
| Registration Persistence | Some devices may require a manual re-registration in certain scenarios, such as if they lose their registration token. |
| Advanced Registration | Registering devices via Serial Number or MAC Address is temporarily unavailable. |
| Device Listing and Overview | The Serial Number and MAC Address columns/fields inside the Appspace Devices Listing Table and Overview page will temporarily appear blank. |
| Device Analytics | Analytics reports will temporarily exclude the Serial Number and MAC Address data columns. |
What Administrators Need to Do
To ensure minimal disruption to your daily operations, please keep the following required actions and expectations in mind:
- Perform Manual Re-Registrations If Needed — If an affected Windows Electron device loses its registration token, perform a manual re-registration to bring it back online and return it to service.
- Expect Limited Inventory Visibility — Note that your device inventory views will temporarily display less hardware identification information, as the Serial Number and MAC Address fields will appear blank.
- Account for Analytics Gaps — Be aware that your scheduled or manual reports and analytics will not include Serial Number or MAC Address data during this mitigation period.
Looking Ahead
These changes are entirely temporary and have been implemented solely to maintain strong tenant isolation and protect customer environments. Our engineering teams are actively working on a long-term solution that will fully restore the affected functionality while continuing to uphold the highest standards for device identification and data security.
We appreciate your patience and will share additional updates as improvements become available.
